Wow, the semester is over already. Now is the time to look back at how I spent my semester in terms of PE, and whether I accomplished my goals and actions.
Goals: 1) Be able to hold a casual conversation: My goal was to be able to have natural and interesting conversations with Japanese speakers by the end of the semester. I believe I got more comfortable at this over the course of the semester. I noticed I could hold a conversation with native Japanese speakers who showed up to one of the Japanese language tables. I can also chat via Japanese texts with some of my friends who took Japanese in the past. 2) Understand simple dialogues in anime and movies without subtitles: I wanted to have as minimal need for subtitles as possible, and I believe I made good progress with this. I started watching some series that have simple grammatical structures, (Chi's Sweet Home), and noticed that I could understand what was being talked about 50% of the time, because of their simplicity. Actions: 1) Watch anime and pay attention to speech: I was excited about this, but I did not really follow this action because of how busy I was. I would like to do this action through the summer, in order to keep Japanese fresh in my head. 2) Go to Japanese language tables at least once every two weeks: I tried to make it to language tables as much as I could. I believe I went to around 4 this semester, one of them being the advanced table. I still wish I went to more tables though. 3) Go to office hours: I went to an office hour to practice for the Oral Exam, and it was very helpful. However, I did not go to office hours after practicing for the Midterm. I should really make use of this resource more in the upcoming year.

I think I did not do as great a job as I hoped for with the written exam, and this was my lowest score in a Japanese exam so far. The reason is partially because I had major trouble with time-management during the midterms week, and did not have enough time to study Japanese to a comfortable level. I want to work more for the final, and throughout the semester to make up for this. I also want to go through the grammatical content and vocabulary regularly, instead of trying to cram Japanese the night before exams.
As for the oral exam, I believe that besides a couple things, it went well. One of the main reasons for this is because I went to Shibata Sensei's office hours the day before my exam, and took note of her feedback and practiced accordingly. If I did not practice with her beforehand, I don't think the oral exam would go as well. Therefore, I am happy about the oral exam. Since this is the middle of the semester, it is time to reflect back on my PE goals from the beginning of this semester, and reflect back on what I have accomplished so far.
Goals: 1) Be able to hold a casual conversation: My goal is to be able to have natural and interesting conversations with Japanese speakers by the end of the semester. I believe I am getting more comfortable at this. I started chatting in Japanese with some of my friends who took JPN classes in previous years, mostly through text. 2) Understand simple dialogues in anime and movies without subtitles: I want to have as minimal need for subtitles as possible. I started watching some series that have simple grammatical structures, (Chi's Sweet Home), and noticed that I could understand what was being talked about 50% of the time, because of their simplicity. Actions: 1) Meet with a JPN102 tutor to practice speaking: My friend is tutoring JPN101 and JPN102 for Wilson College, and she offered to help me practice. I did not do this during the semester. I am going to remove this action from my list 1) Watch anime and pay attention to speech I am adding this action into my list for the second half of the second semester. I want to keep watching anime, and pay attention to grammatical structures that we learned in class, and casual speech. 2) Go to Japanese language tables at least once every two weeks: I have only been to one language table so far. I am planning to attend more language tables as they are very helpful for practicing casual conversations. I am also planning to go to some non-beginner language tables to get exposed to more challenging conversations. 3) Go to office hours: I went to an office hour to practice for the Oral Exam, and it was very helpful. I want to go to more office hours in the future to practice speaking.
I have learned and improved a lot throughout the last semester, and I am getting more comfortable with Japanese with every lecture. With the beginning of a new semester, I am going to post a new PE goal & action statement to stride for.
Goals: 1) Be able to hold a casual conversation: My goal is to be able to have natural and interesting conversations with Japanese speakers by the end of the semester. 2) Understand simple dialogues in anime and movies without subtitles: I want to have as minimal need for subtitles as possible. Actions: 1) Meet with a JPN102 tutor to practice speaking: My friend is tutoring JPN101 and JPN102 for Wilson College, and she offered to help me practice. I signed up to meet with her once every week to practice speaking and grammar. I believe that might be a good way to improve my speaking skills. 2) Go to Japanese language tables at least once every two weeks: I went to a couple language tables last semester, but I should've made use of that resource more. This semester, I am planning to attend more language tables as they are very helpful for practicing casual conversations. I am also planning to go to some non-beginner language tables to get exposed to more challenging conversations. 3) Go to office hours: I have not used office hours as much as I should have in the last semester. I will sign up for at least a couple office hours this semester, and practice my speaking along with new grammar. Goals:
1) Listening Comprehension: I can understand bits and pieces of Japanese media, if they contain words or phrases that I have learned in class. Also, I believe noticing long vowels, glides, and double consonants while listening got easier for me overall. I can also notice -TE form, and casual speech. 2) Speaking and Conversation: It got easier to hold a casual conversation overall. When I visited my high school during winter break, I could talk for a while to a teacher who is a fluent Japanese speaker. 3) Close to natural: I got positive comments in our final video about my pronunciation. I believe all the PE action statements were helpful for me in improving my speech naturalness. Action statements: 1) Go to Japanese tables: I tried to go to as many Japanese language tables as I could, but I should've gone more. Language tables are a great way to practice 2) Watch anime and listen to Japanese songs: I watched some anime during winter break, and managed to pick up some bits and pieces, and familiar phrases, along with some -TE form. It is really interesting to see how often the -TE form and casual speech is used in anime. 3) Practice speaking with friends or go to office hours: Near the end of the semester, I signed up to meet with Linh Tran '19, my friend who is a residential college JPN 101 tutor, to practice speaking, and managed to go to a meeting once. It was helpful, I am planning to continue going in the future. However, I should've utilized office hours more. |
